The United States Embassy has advised the President Muhammadu Buhari government to apply caution in the handling of protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, also known as Shittes.
The US Government cautioned both the Federal Government, including the security forces and members of the IMN to exercise restraints in order not to escalate the crisis.
This was contained in a brief statement made available to reporters by the United States Embassy in Nigeria on Thursday.
The US stated that it was concerned by the fatalities as a result of the clashes.
It, therefore, called on the government to investigate the clashes and bring all perpetrators of the clashes to book.
The statement reads, ‘’The United States Embassy is concerned by the deaths resulting from clashes between Nigerian security forces and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in areas surrounding Abuja.
“We urge Government of Nigeria authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the events and to take appropriate action to hold accountable those responsible for violations of Nigerian law. We urge restraint on all sides.”
