Unknown gunmen have attacked the venue of a PVC Sensitization programme in Ipo, Ikwerre Local government area of Rivers State, leaving one person dead and several other injured.
It was gathered that the Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Samuel Wanosike, narrowly escaped death in the attack.
Wanosike is said to be an ally to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.
Commander of the Joint Task Force deployed to Ikwerre Local Government, who confirmed the incident to DAILY POST, said the unknown gunmen ambushed the Chairman and other PDP Leaders in Ikwerre Local government.
Chris Omodu, who is the Chief Press Secretary of Samuel Wanosike, said the incident has been reported to the Police.
“While we were on the ground of our sensitization rally, we started hearing gunshots. Before we knew it, we saw the boys approaching us and shooting directly at us.
“They went straight to the car of the LGA Chairman and started shooting him but thank God his vehicle is bullet-proof if not, he would have been killed by now.
“Many people were hit with bullets during the shooting and one person is already dead. We went straight to the Igwuruta Police station to report,” he said.
In the meantime, the Rivers state Police Command is yet to react to the development.
