Liverpool defender, Virgil Van Dijk has admitted he made a terrible decision when he fouled Manchester City’s Leroy Sane in the dying minutes of their Premier League match on Sunday.
The defender, however, said was he was relieved when City forward, Riyad Mahrez missed the spot kick.
City were gifted a golden opportunity late on when Van Dijk brought down Sane in the box with just minutes to play.
There was some confusion among the City players as to who would take it, with Mahrez deciding to step up.
However, Van Dijk’s mistake proved insignificant as the Algerian sent his effort high over the bar.
“It is not smart to dive in there,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.
“It was a penalty and it shouldn’t have happened, but I’m very happy we didn’t concede.”
“I watched it because I wanted to get the rebound if he missed it.
“They did well, as did we, up until the penalty moment.
“We were unlucky not to score, and lucky not to concede as well, so I think we canceled each other out.
“It was a tough game against the champions and I’m happy we kept the clean sheet.
“We wanted to bounce back from our defeat to Napoli and I think we did that.”
